Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered a large deployment of police officers and equipment across the state. This is to protect lives and property, keep public order, and ensure a peaceful Democracy Day celebration.
This information came from a statement by the police public relations officer for Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, in Warri on Friday.
Edafe mentioned that the security plan includes regular police officers, tactical teams, intelligence agents, and undercover officers in key areas. These include important infrastructure, parks, places of worship, major roads, and other public spaces.
Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders have also been told to enhance visible policing, gather intelligence, and conduct patrols to build confidence in their areas.
He said, "The Commissioner of Police assured residents of the State of adequate security before, during, and after the 2026 Democracy Day celebration."
The CP also urged residents to celebrate responsibly and stay alert. He asked them to report any suspicious people or activities to the nearest police station or security agency. He further encouraged the public to work with security personnel and follow the law during the celebration.
Wishing everyone a peaceful Democracy Day, CP Yemi Oyeniyi assured the public of "the Command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property." He warned criminals not to take advantage of the celebrations to commit crimes, stating that the police are ready to respond strongly to any threats to public safety.
Democracy Day is a public holiday in Nigeria that marks the return of democracy in 1999. It has been celebrated every year since 2000, initially on May 29 until the date was changed to June 12 in 2018.
