The Nigeria Police in Cross River State is looking into the death of a 14-year-old girl, Nancy Peter. She reportedly died after being beaten by her mother and a pastor in the Boki Local Government Area.

The police have taken Nancy's mother, Agnes Peter, 45, and a pastor named Samson Dago, 43, into custody. This incident happened in Wula Community.

On Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Eitokpah Sunday, shared details about the case. He said early investigations indicated the girl was allegedly beaten after being accused of stealing.

Mr Sunday, who is an assistant superintendent of police, explained that Agnes Peter supposedly beat her daughter before taking her to Pastor Samson Dago, who also allegedly used a cane on the girl.

"Preliminary findings reveal that the victim was allegedly beaten by her mother, Mrs Agnes Peter, aged 45 years, over allegations of theft. It was further alleged that the mother subsequently took the child to a pastor, Pastor Samson Roman Dago, aged 43 years, who also allegedly subjected the minor to corporal punishment using a cane (koboko)," the statement said.

The police reported that Nancy later lost consciousness and was taken to a medical facility in Wula Community. Sadly, medical staff confirmed she was dead upon arrival.

The police also responded to rumors on social media claiming that the teenager was sexually assaulted before her death. Mr Sunday stated that no evidence has been found to back up those claims.

The police spokesperson confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway. They aim to find out what happened leading to the girl's death and how all involved parties are connected to the case.

He mentioned that proper legal action would follow based on what the investigation uncovers.

This tragic incident has sparked renewed worries about child abuse and corporal punishment in Nigeria. This is despite laws already in place to protect children.
