The Osun State Police Command has arrested six suspected cultists during raids on known criminal hideouts in Osogbo, the state capital.
The command's spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, shared this in a statement on Tuesday. He said the suspects are believed to be members of the Eiye Confraternity. They are linked to a gang that has been causing trouble for residents near the Mackay Junction area of the town.
Ojelabi added that police found suspected charms, illegal drugs, and cash believed to be from drug-related activities during the raids.
The statement said, "The Osun State Police Command has recorded another operational breakthrough following targeted, intelligence-led raids on identified black spots and criminal hideouts across Osogbo, in compliance with the directives of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan Zungura."
During these operations, police arrested some suspected cultists. Their names are Ajibade Lateef, 21, Olaniyi Kabiru, 27, Ifaleke Ifedeji, 18, Tajudeen Wasiu, 35, Abideen Babatunde, 35, and Opeyemi Lukman, 18.
Preliminary investigations show that the suspects are thought to be members of the Eiye Confraternity. They are suspected to be part of a dangerous gang terrorising residents in the Mackay Junction area of Osogbo.
The Commissioner of Police called on parents, guardians, community leaders, landlords, and others to stay alert. He urged them to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or use emergency contacts.
He also advised youths to avoid cultism, illegal drugs, and criminal groups. He warned that being involved in crime could lead to serious consequences.
The statement further noted, "The raids will continue across identified black spots and criminal hideouts until criminal elements are flushed out and lasting peace and security are sustained in Osogbo and other parts of Osun State."
The command remains dedicated to protecting lives and properties. They urge the public to work with the police in the fight against crime.
These arrests come amid rising worries about cult-related violence in Osogbo.
PUNCH had earlier reported that two people died during clashes between rival cult groups in the state capital. This incident reportedly took place at a lounge in Owoeba, along the Osogbo-Ilesa Road, where attackers hit the victims.
