Police save 10 passengers after bandit attack in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has rescued 10 passengers after an attack by suspected bandits on the Jos-Kano highway.

The command shared this information in a statement on Monday by its Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna.

The statement said that five suspected armed bandits, carrying machetes and a gun, blocked the highway. They attacked a commercial vehicle and kidnapped 13 of the 20 passengers inside.

"On 26th July, 2026, at about 1730hrs, the Divisional Police Officer, Doguwa Division, got a distress call. A Toyota Hiace bus with Registration No. BKK 6824 XA, was on its way from Jos to Kano when armed men struck at the Falgore Forest area in Doguwa Local Government. This happened between Gate Two Safer Highway and Dogo Dutse.

"The report noted that five armed bandits with machetes and firearms blocked the road, attacked the vehicle, and took 13 out of the 20 passengers," the statement said.

After receiving the distress call, the DPO quickly mobilized a team of tactical police operatives to the scene. They engaged the criminals in a gunfight.

"Thanks to the quick and organized response from the Police team, nine victims were rescued. One other male victim managed to escape later. Sadly, three victims are still held captive, which includes one male and two females," the statement added.

The Command mentioned that the rescued victims were taken to Doguwa General Hospital for medical checks and are now in stable condition while getting treatment.

It noted that efforts to find the remaining captives and catch the suspects have been stepped up. This includes sending more tactical teams and gathering intelligence.

"This decisive operation shows the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, led by the Inspector-General of Police, to proactive policing, quick response, and protecting lives and property with the help of the community," the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Ibrahim Bakori, praised residents and road users for giving timely information.

He assured residents that the Command will continue to protect lives and property in the state.

"Investigation into the incident is ongoing. We will keep the public updated on any new developments in due time," the statement concluded.
