The police have warned politicians and their supporters not to destroy campaign posters, banners, and billboards of rival candidates as the 2027 general elections approach.

On Wednesday, the police noticed an increase in cases of tearing, defacing, and destroying campaign materials nationwide. The police said those caught doing this will be arrested and prosecuted.

In a statement released on 4 November, police spokesperson Ani Iniedu said this behavior shows political intolerance. He urged everyone involved to stop immediately.

The police explained that damaging, defacing, or unlawfully removing another candidate’s campaign materials could lead to charges of malicious damage. This is a criminal offense under laws like Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law.

"Political differences or loyalty to a particular party do not give anyone the right to destroy another candidate’s property or infringe on their right to campaign freely," the statement said.

The police emphasized that all political parties and candidates, no matter their affiliations or status, deserve equal protection under the law. They added that no person or group can decide whose campaign materials should be displayed or destroyed.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, told police commissioners in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take measures to stop these incidents. He instructed them to investigate reports and ensure that suspects are arrested and prosecuted.

The police also warned that political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage, or help destroy campaign materials will be held accountable if there is evidence of their involvement.

The police urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to run their campaigns peacefully and respect others’ rights. They warned that political intolerance, intimidation, and criminal actions must not harm Nigeria’s democracy.

"The Nigeria Police Force will not allow political thugs and troublemakers to turn the nation’s political environment into a place of lawlessness," the statement said. "Those who decide to break the law will face the full consequences of their actions."

PREMIUM TIMES reported that campaigns have begun all over the country as preparations continue for the early 2027 general elections.
