Premier League breaks record with £3.46 billion in summer transfers

Premier League clubs have set a new record for summer transfer spending, reaching £3.46 billion this transfer window.

Before deadline day, English clubs had already spent over £3 billion, beating last year's record of £3.14 billion.

On deadline day alone, clubs spent £475 million, compared to £391 million last year.

BBC Sport reported on Wednesday that spending in the Premier League has grown significantly in recent years. Five years ago, clubs spent only £1.13 billion, showing a huge increase in spending now.

Premier League clubs also had the most expensive transfers this summer. Three of the ten costliest signings in football history were made by English teams.

Who Spent the Most?

Manchester City made headlines with the late signing of Fernandez, bringing their summer spending to £458 million. New manager Enzo Maresca is being well supported to build his own squad after taking over from Pep Guardiola.

This amount is a new Premier League record for a single transfer window, surpassing Liverpool’s £415 million from last summer. City also earned £304 million from player sales.

Chelsea followed as the second biggest spenders, shelling out £349 million. However, they sold £382 million worth of players, ending up with a net profit of £33 million.

Tottenham came in third with £302 million spent, hoping to avoid another tough season and to compete at the top again.

Newly promoted Ipswich made a splash too, spending £171 million to stay in the Premier League, outdoing Manchester United, who spent £148 million on new players.

Hull, back in the Premier League this season, had a busy transfer window, bringing in 18 new players, six of whom joined on deadline day.
