Paris Saint-Germain kicked off their European journey with a trophy on Wednesday. They beat Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg. This win makes PSG only the third club to win the UEFA Super Cup back-to-back.

The Champions League winners faced a tough challenge from Villa. Then, Désiré Doué scored in the second half, sealing a match that could have gone either way. PSG had also won last year’s Super Cup by beating Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in Udine.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave Luis Enrique’s team the first goal. Aston Villa quickly answered back with a goal from 17-year-old Brian Madjo. He became the youngest scorer in Super Cup history.

Madjo’s equalizer boosted the confidence of Unai Emery’s team. Villa came to Salzburg as Europa League champions after winning 3-0 against Freiburg in May. They showed they were not intimidated by the European champions and kept pushing to change the game.

But PSG, used to high-stakes moments in Europe, found their winning touch. Doué scored the winner in the second half. This gave the French champions more European silverware and continued their strong run under Enrique.

This victory also put PSG in a chance to make history. UEFA recognized them as only the second club in the modern era to retain the Super Cup. Real Madrid did this in 2016 and 2017.

For Villa, losing was a tough outcome for a performance that showed their Europa League win was no accident. The English side had already given PSG a hard time in their past matches.

They lost their 2025 Champions League quarter-final 5-4 on aggregate. They came back from a 3-1 first-leg defeat to win the second leg 3-2. That history was clear again in Salzburg as Emery’s team fought hard, even against a PSG packed with champions.

The match also had an interesting twist. Somali referee Omar Artan took charge after being controversially left out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. UEFA chose Artan for the Super Cup after he was denied entry to the U.S. ahead of the World Cup.

The game took place at Stadion Salzburg, which hosted its first major UEFA club final. This was also the 14th different venue for the Super Cup since it moved from its longtime home in Monaco.

But for PSG, this night was all about winning another trophy. After winning back-to-back Champions League titles and last season’s Super Cup, Enrique’s team has now added another European title to their impressive collection.

With Doué again scoring the crucial goal, Paris has shown that their desire for trophies remains strong after the summer.
