Lens players celebrated after winning the French Super Cup (Trophee des Champions) against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The match took place at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis in Lens, northern France on August 16, 2026.
Despite being reduced to ten players, Lens beat PSG 1-0, thanks to Florian Thauvin's goal in the first half. This victory denied PSG a second trophy in just five days.
It was a big win for Lens in their first match under new coach Dino Toppmoeller. They added this trophy to their French Cup title won in May under former coach Pierre Sage.
PSG had just beaten Aston Villa on Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup. They struggled to find their rhythm at Lens’ stadium, even after Lens’ Kyllian Antonio was sent off in the first half.
PSG coach Luis Enrique said, “I think we deserved more. But I have to congratulate Lens. They won, and they played very well, with their usual intensity. We played a very good match, but we didn’t have the luck we needed.”
Now, PSG will focus on starting their Ligue 1 title defense at home against Rennes next week. They will miss defender Nuno Mendes for that match after he received a red card late in the game.
Lens finished last season as runners-up in Ligue 1 behind PSG. They qualified for this match after winning their first ever French Cup with a 3-1 victory over Nice.
Luis Enrique named a strong lineup, making just three changes from the team that won the Super Cup. Lucas Digne made his second debut after rejoining the club from Aston Villa.
Bradley Barcola, who is linked with a possible move to Liverpool, was not included in the squad. PSG controlled possession early on but struggled to create clear chances.
Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser made an easy save from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s shot. As the match went on, Lens grew stronger and took the lead in the 32nd minute.
PSG failed to clear the ball, allowing Thauvin to slot it home from Matthieu Udol’s cross-shot. But Lens faced a setback six minutes before half-time when Antonio received a red card for a tackle on Maghnes Akliouche.
PSG almost took advantage of the extra player before the half-time break. Desire Doue’s shot from a tight angle hit the crossbar. After the break, PSG struggled to find their rhythm again.
Thauvin missed a chance to extend Lens’ lead as they continued to threaten on the counter. PSG substitute Mendes had a chance to equalize, firing a long-range shot just over the bar.
Luis Enrique also brought on Fabian Ruiz and Ousmane Dembele from the bench. Dembele forced another easy save from Risser. With three minutes left, PSG also went down to ten men.
Mendes received a straight red card for elbowing Lens wing-back Michal Skoras in the face off the ball.
