The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has denied claims that its General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, took part in a protest against former President Goodluck Jonathan's government.

In a statement on X on Tuesday, the church said a photo of Pastor Adeboye with a placard during a public event has been wrongly shared online. This image has been incorrectly connected to Jonathan’s presidency.

Recently, this picture came back into circulation as people criticized the pastor for not speaking out against insecurity, killings, and kidnappings happening under President Bola Tinubu.

Many users on social media posted the photo, which was originally from the Punch newspaper, suggesting that Pastor Adeboye was more outspoken during previous administrations. Others defended him, saying the photo was taken out of context and misrepresented.

RCCG clarified that the photo was taken during a peaceful nationwide prayer walk organized by the Christian Association of Nigeria on February 2, 2020, while Muhammadu Buhari was president.

The church explained that CAN had called for a three-day fasting and prayer program starting on January 31, 2020. This was to seek divine help against terrorism, killings, and rising insecurity in Nigeria. The prayer walk followed church services across the country.

Pastor Adeboye joined the Lagos prayer walk after RCCG's monthly Thanksgiving service at the church’s national headquarters in Ebute-Metta. The procession went through Yaba and returned to the church.

RCCG’s public relations team said the walk aimed to highlight the worsening security situation in Nigeria and was not linked to Jonathan’s government in any way.

The church noted that Pastor Adeboye’s message during the event was “all lives matter to God,” emphasizing the importance of every Nigerian, no matter their religion.

The church also responded to claims that the pastor has not spoken on national issues. It said he continues to address matters affecting the country, despite not holding any political position.

RCCG mentioned comments from Pastor Adeboye during the November 2025 Holy Ghost Service, where he urged the President to give security leaders a clear ultimatum to end terrorism or step down. He warned that ongoing insecurity could lead to foreign intervention.

While recognizing the frustrations Nigerians have over the country’s problems, the church said it is unrealistic to expect Pastor Adeboye to direct the President or the First Lady on governance.

“Yes, Nigeria is facing huge challenges, and citizens have every right to seek solutions. But the demand for Pastor Adeboye to ‘command’ the President or First Lady on how to manage the nation is unreasonable,” the statement said.

The church encouraged the public to check information through its official channels and avoid spreading false narratives.
