Referees admit mistake over Haaland's goal against Man United

The group that oversees referees in the Premier League, Pro Ref, has admitted to making a mistake regarding Erling Haaland’s winning goal in Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Haaland scored in the 60th minute at Old Trafford. He found the net at the back post after a cross from Josko Gvardiol. Initially, the goal was ruled out for offside.

VAR then stepped in and changed the decision. They decided that Haaland was onside because of a touch from United defender Patrick Dorgu.

But there was a discussion about whether Enzo Fernandez, who was offside and diving for the ball, was affecting the play.

According to a report from BBC Sport on Sunday, Pro Ref released a statement saying, "It was established that Enzo Fernandez did not play the ball and therefore that makes any offside offence subjective."

They added, "However, on this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review."

Pro Ref also mentioned, "Contact has been made with Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we deem is an error of judgement. A review of the incident will take place."
