Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has confirmed that Lagos is ready to host the first National Intermediate Games. The Main Organising Committee inspected facilities in the state on Wednesday, according to The PUNCH.
The National Intermediate Games was introduced by the National Sports Commission. Its goal is to help young athletes move from grassroots to elite sports. The first edition is set for September.
The inspection team was led by the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade. He expressed his happiness with how prepared the state is.
During the visit, the team checked on the ongoing renovation at Teslim Balogun Stadium. The stadium is getting a new playing surface and upgrades to important infrastructure.
Contractors working on the stadium told the commission that they are on track. They expect the stadium to be ready by September 2026.
The team also looked at the indoor sports hall, basketball facilities, and other venues for the Games.
Governor Sanwo-Olu recently approved the Local Organising Committee for the competition. He said Lagos has a history of hosting big sports events and supporting young athletes.
"We will host the Games excellently because it reflects what Nigerians want. We are committed to youth and sports development. We want to host the Games in a way that everyone will admire," Sanwo-Olu said.
He added, "The leadership of the National Sports Commission has put Nigerian sports on the right path. The team is focused and dedicated. The good relationship between Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade is commendable.
"We are proud of their work, and their vision matches our goals for sports development.
"Sports is not magic; it comes from careful planning, real investment, and consistency. What the Commission is doing now gives us hope that Nigerian sports is moving in a positive direction."
Olopade also praised Lagos State for its preparations for the Games.
"Lagos has shown readiness for the Games. It is significant that the first National Sports Festival was held in Lagos, and now the first National Intermediate Games will also take place here.
"Lagos has a strong history in sports. Last year, Lagos hosted the E1 Powerboat World Championship and brought the Davis Cup back to the city after nearly two decades.
"Lagos is committed to hosting the National Intermediate Games. What we have seen during this inspection makes us confident that the state is ready for a top-quality competition.
"The National Intermediate Games is important for developing athletes. It helps bridge the gap between youth sports and elite competition, creating a path for discovering and nurturing talent.
"We are happy with the support from Lagos State and all involved parties."
