Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said Africa's success in the global economy relies on how well it uses innovation, builds infrastructure, and includes women in science and technology.

The governor spoke on Tuesday at the fifth Women in Technology and Engineering Summit and Awards (WITE) at the MUSON Centre in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu was represented by the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake. He emphasized that Africa needs to actively shape its future instead of waiting for opportunities to come from outside.

The two-day summit had the theme “Engineering Africa’s Future: Innovation, Infrastructure and Inclusive Technology.” It brought together policymakers, tech leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators to discuss technology's future and women's roles in STEM fields.

Organized by Womenovate, the event aims to boost women's leadership and participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Sanwo-Olu described the talent of women as one of Africa's most neglected resources. He warned that not having enough women in STEM can create economic and development problems.

“This is not just a gender issue. It is an economic issue, a development issue and ultimately a competitiveness issue,” he stated.

He praised Womenovate for creating chances that help women and girls succeed in technology and engineering.

“Through your efforts, you are helping to build a future where talent, innovation and leadership are determined not by gender, but by vision, competence and impact,” he added.

The governor also mentioned insights from artificial intelligence. He pointed out how different AI platforms produce responses and noted that diverse leadership can often lead to better innovation outcomes.

“There is a woman at the helm and women make things better,” he remarked.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted Lagos' digital transformation efforts. He said the state has laid about 3,000 kilometres of fibre-optic infrastructure from 2019 to 2025, which will connect over one million more residents.

He noted that the government continues to invest in broadband, transport, and energy infrastructure to create a space where innovation can grow.

The governor shared a story about a female entrepreneur who received state support. She got funding, business training, and digital help, which allowed her to expand her customer base across Africa, Asia, and South America.

“When connected to the right tools and given the right opportunities, women will scale and deliver value,” he said. He encouraged young innovators to “dream boldly and innovate fearlessly.”
