Nollywood actor Zubby Michael has said that some people in the industry are hesitant to help Igbo talents. He believes this is because they worry that their mentees could quickly become their rivals.
Michael shared this in an interview with Broadway TV, which started trending on Sunday.
He explained that Igbo talents learn quickly and can gain skills fast. This speed makes some executives nervous about mentoring them.
He said, “Igbo people are fast learners and they are capable of making it big with just a little. You might decide to mentor an Igbo person and what took you 10 years to learn, he will learn it in one year and six months.
“And if you don’t treat him well, he will leave you and start doing the same business you taught him and become your competition. So, people are scared of that.”
Reluctance from Igbo Leaders
Michael also said that the fear of rivalry is not only from non-Igbo executives. He claimed that some Igbo leaders in the industry feel the same way.
“Industry executives, including some Igbos, don’t like supporting Igbos because they feel like they will get betrayed by their mentee outshining them,” he said.
