Spain’s World Cup-winning team was welcomed by about two million excited fans on Monday. Madrid burst into celebration after La Roja’s historic win at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Just a day after beating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in New Jersey, Spain’s players rode through the streets of the capital on an open-top bus. The bus had the words “Kings of the World” written on it and was decorated with two giant stars, marking the nation’s two World Cup victories.
The atmosphere in Madrid was electric as waves of red and gold filled the city. Fans, many in Spain jerseys and waving national flags, lined the parade route for hours to cheer for Luis de la Fuente’s champions.
The Spanish government reported that nearly two million people came out to celebrate one of the greatest moments in the country’s football history.
For many fans, the trip was worth it. “We’re full of enthusiasm for fulfilling the dream of becoming world champions,” said 34-year-old Fran Carratalá, who traveled from Catalonia to join the celebrations.
Another fan, Daniel Gaona, flew in from Estonia, where he lives, after watching the final in Madrid. “Everybody was crazy. It was a very good mood. People were very happy. There were no problems, just a lot of happiness,” the 44-year-old shared.
“It’s something you have to come here to live.”
The joy of Spain’s players was clear during the parade. Most wore T-shirts that said “We are champions.” Some celebrated shirtless, dancing and waving to fans while kicking footballs into the happy crowd.
Striker Borja Iglesias added to the fun by taking over a DJ console on top of the bus. He entertained thousands with music as the champions drove through Madrid.
The bus also had another message that showed the unity behind Spain’s success: “Stars shine together.”
Before the parade, the squad visited King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Both had gone to New Jersey to see Spain’s dramatic win over Argentina in the final.
Prime Minister Sánchez praised the players and coaching staff for their impressive performance. “I would like to give immense thanks to the staff and the players for your playing style, effort and victory,” he said.
King Felipe VI also spoke about the team’s performance. “You’ve been a real team, showing solidarity and generosity, and you’ve won with real class. Those two stars, which shine so brightly for the whole of Spain, will be yours forever. But you are all a stellar and legendary team in the history of our football and Spanish sport.”
The Spanish leader looked forward with hope, wishing for La Roja to lift a third FIFA World Cup when Spain co-hosts the 2030 tournament with Portugal and Morocco.
After their victory in North America, Spain’s unforgettable homecoming showed how big their achievement was. Millions turned Madrid into a sea of celebration as the country’s newest football legends took part in a victory tour worthy of world champions.
