Nigeria’s Super Eagles kicked off their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory against Madagascar. The match took place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
This win was special as debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor scored the goals that turned the game around. Madagascar had taken the lead early on, catching Nigeria off guard.
Madagascar scored first after quickly moving the ball forward, leaving goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali with no chance. The early goal quieted the home crowd and put Nigeria under pressure.
Nigeria responded just before halftime. Ilenikhena found the net in the first minute of stoppage time. His goal not only brought the score to 1-1 but also marked his first goal for the Super Eagles in his debut match.
The equalizer sent both teams into the break tied at 1-1. In the second half, Nigeria came out strong, with captain Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi controlling the midfield and pushing for more chances.
Their efforts paid off when Usor scored the winning goal in the second half. This goal completed Nigeria’s comeback and secured all three points for the Super Eagles.
With this result, Eric Chelle’s team started their Group L campaign on a positive note. Next, Nigeria will travel to face Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29. Madagascar will also play on that day, hosting Tanzania.
The Super Eagles will miss striker Victor Osimhen for these opening qualifiers due to injury. After this match, Nigeria is second in Group L with three points, tied with Guinea-Bissau, who lead on goal difference. Currently, both Tanzania and Madagascar have not earned any points.
