Asisat Oshoala and Toni Payne scored as Nigeria's Super Falcons defeated Senegal's Teranga Lionesses 2-1 in an international friendly on Friday in Ikenne-Remo. This match was part of their preparations for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Super Falcons, who have won the African title ten times, played well. They took charge early and kept control of the game for most of the time, even as Senegal tried to fight back late in the match.
Oshoala scored the first goal in the 32nd minute after Nigeria was awarded a penalty. The experienced forward confidently converted from the spot. This was her first match back with the national team since she played in the WAFCON 2024 final.
After taking the lead, the Super Falcons kept pushing forward. They moved the ball well and created chances near Senegal's goal. Their hard work paid off again in the 43rd minute when Payne scored to make it 2-0. Payne also returned to the team after the WAFCON 2024 final and showed her value to the squad.
Nigeria controlled the game for most of the time, limiting Senegal's chances and managing possession well. But in the 86th minute, Senegal scored a goal, making the match tense as they tried to come back.
Despite the pressure, the Super Falcons stayed calm and held on to their lead until the end of the match. This was the first time Nigeria faced Senegal at the senior women's level, making the match even more special as both teams prepare for the upcoming WAFCON tournament.
The two teams are set to meet again for a second friendly at the same venue in Ikenne-Remo on June 8. Coach Justine Madugu and his players will use these friendly matches to sharpen their tactics and check their readiness for the tournament in Morocco. The Super Falcons aim to defend their title and bring home the African crown again.
