Nigeria is set to shine in at least three categories at the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards. The first nominees were announced on Tuesday, and excitement is building.
The awards ceremony will take place on Monday, 7 December, at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in Iganmu, Lagos. It will gather Africa’s football stars and officials for one of the continent’s biggest annual events.
So far, Nigeria has nominations in the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, Women’s Young Player of the Year, and Women’s National Team of the Year categories.
Christiana Uzoma, the goalkeeper for Edo Queens, is in the running for the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award. She had a great season with the NWFL champions and helped her team reach the final of the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament.
Uzoma will compete against tough players like ChloN’Gazizi, Michaely Bihina, Cynthia Konlan, Mercy Sikelo, Fatoumata Karantao, Khadija Er-Rmichi, Adji Ndiaye, Kaylin Swart, and Hazel Nali.
Interestingly, three-time winner Chiamaka Nnadozie is not on this year’s list. The Super Falcons and Brighton goalkeeper is missing after her dominating performances in previous awards.
In the Women’s Young Player of the Year category, Kemi Adegbuyi has received a nomination. She had an impressive season with Robo Queens and the Flamingos.
Adegbuyi’s nomination follows her being named the NWFL Player of the Season and the Super Six Most Valuable Player. She also showed her talent in the WAFU-B region during the Women’s Champions League qualifying.
Janet Akekoromowei, who plays for Benfica and is a goal-scoring talent for the Falconets, has also been shortlisted. This means Nigeria has two strong contenders in this category.
At the national team level, the Super Falcons are nominated for the Women’s National Team of the Year award. This comes despite not being able to keep their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in 2026.
Nigeria will compete against Algeria, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, and WAFCON champions Cameroon for this award.
The winners will be announced at the 2026 CAF Awards ceremony in Lagos on 7 December. Nigeria hopes to turn its nominations into trophies right at home.
