Plateau State teachers, part of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), held a peaceful protest on Tuesday. They raised concerns about insecurity and other issues affecting their members across the country.

The teachers carried placards with different messages, calling for the government to urgently address security issues nationwide.

They marched through major streets in Jos and made their way to the Government House in Rayfield. There, they delivered a letter listing their demands to the state government.

During the protest, Comrade Elisha Haruna, the Plateau State Chairman of the NUT, spoke about the purpose of the demonstration. He said it was to show support for teachers and students who have been victims of insecurity, especially kidnappings, in Nigeria.

"We are here in solidarity with all our members who are victims of kidnapping, especially our members in Borno, Yobe, Plateau, Oyo, and other states who are presently in the hands of kidnappers," he stated.

Haruna expressed concern that the growing security issues have made schools unsafe for both teachers and students.

"We are urging the Federal Government to take decisive action to address the security challenges confronting teachers because we can no longer feel safe in our classrooms," he added.

The union leader also pointed out other problems teachers face in Plateau State. He mentioned delays in promotions and a shortage of teachers in public schools.

"We also have challenges at the local level which we want the state government to address. These include promotion-related issues and the shortage of teachers in our schools," he said.

Receiving the protest letter for the state government was retired Brigadier General Gakji Shipi, the Special Adviser to Governor Caleb Mutfwang on Security. He praised the teachers for their peaceful conduct during the protest.

Shipi promised the teachers that the state government would look into their demands and take necessary actions to address them.

He also reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving the welfare of teachers and dealing with the security issues affecting people in the state.
