Team Nigeria is set to chase more medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Monday. Athletes will compete in athletics, weightlifting, swimming, para athletics, and wheelchair basketball.
Nigeria enters Day Four with a positive vibe after a strong start. The team has already won seven medals, which include three gold and four silver.
The best results for Nigeria have come from para powerlifting. Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and Riluwan Idris each won gold medals. Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema, and Rita Ferdinand brought home silver medals. Weightlifter Ruth Asuquo Nyong added the seventh medal, winning silver in the women's 48kg event.
On Monday, all eyes will be on the athletics track as Nigeria's star sprinters kick off their races. National champion Favour Ashe will compete in Heat One of the men's 100 metres first round. Nicholas Fakorede will race in Heat 10. In the women's category, Miracle Ezechukwu will run in Heat Eight, hoping to secure a spot in the next round.
Nigeria will also feature in the field events. Oyesade Olatoye will compete in the women's hammer throw qualification.
In weightlifting, Edidiong Umoafia begins Nigeria's challenge in the men's 71kg final. Onome Didih (53kg), Commonwealth champion Rafiatu Lawal (58kg), and Adedapo Opadeji (79kg) will all aim for podium finishes later in the day.
The swimming events will see Clinton Opute, Collins Obi Ebingha, and Abduljabar Adama compete in the men's 100m freestyle heats. Dorcas Oka returns for the women's 50m breaststroke after competing in the 100m breaststroke earlier in the Games.
In para athletics, experienced athlete Eucharia Iyiazi will contest the women's F57 shot put final. Nigeria’s women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team will face India in a key Group B match.
With many of Nigeria’s top athletes set to compete and more chances to win medals, Team Nigeria hopes to build on its strong start and achieve one of its best performances at the Commonwealth Games.
