Barcelona's Lamine Yamal is one of the most exciting young footballers. Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe also made waves as a teenager. A report from MSN on Thursday compares their club and international stats as teenagers, showing how both players made their mark before turning 20.
Yamal has played more matches than Mbappe during his teen years. He has 191 games under his belt, while Mbappe played 150 games. But when it comes to goals, Mbappe takes the lead, scoring 73 times compared to Yamal's 64.
Yamal shines in creating chances. He has 69 assists, while Mbappe managed 48. This means Yamal has a total of 133 goal contributions, while Mbappe has 121. But Mbappe was more efficient in scoring. He found the net every 136.1 minutes, while Yamal scored every 221.4 minutes.
Looking at assists, Mbappe contributed to a goal every 82.1 minutes, while Yamal did this every 106.5 minutes. Interestingly, Mbappe scored just one penalty, while Yamal scored eight penalties.
The two players have taken different paths in their careers. Mbappe debuted for Monaco at 16. He quickly became a key player as Monaco reached the Champions League semi-finals and won Ligue 1 in the 2016-17 season. At 18, he moved to Paris Saint-Germain and won another Ligue 1 title. He also became a World Cup winner with France in 2018, shortly before he turned 20.
On the other hand, Yamal debuted for Barcelona even earlier, at just 15. He became the youngest player to play for Spain at the senior level. Yamal has already won major trophies with Barcelona and has played a big role for Spain in international matches.
Mbappe has shared his thoughts on Yamal's rise. He encourages everyone to focus on Yamal's football skills instead of his personal life. "You can see [Lamine] has passion for football and that’s the only thing he mustn’t lose," Mbappe said during a 2025 interview with Jorge Valdano on Movistar. "He’s a great football player, but in life he’s an 18-year-old kid."
The stats show that Mbappe was a more prolific goal scorer as a teenager. But Yamal's numbers highlight his ability to create chances and overall involvement in goals. Importantly, Yamal's record is still growing, so he has more chances to add to his stats before he turns 20.
