President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with Vincent Bolloré from the Bolloré Group in Paris. They talked about plans to grow the group's investments in Nigeria's creative and digital economy.
Mr Bolloré is a French businessman involved in media, entertainment, communications, and logistics. The Bolloré Group has shares in major global media firms, such as Canal+ and Universal Music Group.
His link to Nigeria's media scene has become more important after Canal+ bought the MultiChoice Group. PREMIUM TIMES reported that Canal+ completed this deal in July, making MultiChoice a full part of the French media group.
MultiChoice runs DStv and GOtv in Nigeria and other African countries. PREMIUM TIMES also noted that MultiChoice Nigeria is now part of Canal+ after this acquisition.
Investment Plans
Bayo Onanuga, the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, shared that the Bolloré Group plans to localise its operations in Nigeria. This will cover film, entertainment, fibre-optic infrastructure, and related areas.
The meeting happened on Thursday while Mr Tinubu was on a working vacation in France.
Mr Bolloré and his team presented what the Presidency called a series of new investments focused on Nigeria. They referred to Nigeria as the “spearhead of Africa’s cultural renaissance.” They mentioned the worldwide success of Nollywood and Afrobeats, along with the rising international interest in Nigerian culture.
Their plans include increasing the local aspect of their operations. The Presidency said this would involve film, entertainment, and fibre-optic infrastructure.
Tinubu's Drive for Local Opportunities
Mr Tinubu welcomed the group’s plans for more localisation in Nigeria. He said Nigeria's growing cultural influence gives a chance to attract more production, investment, and jobs.
The President stressed his government's commitment to economic growth. He emphasized creating jobs for young Nigerians and investing in digitalization.
He also mentioned that the government would keep supporting investments to grow Nigeria’s creative and digital economy. This includes developing local talent and building up infrastructure.
PREMIUM TIMES had reported that Mr Tinubu sees Nigeria’s creative economy as a key area for growth. He highlighted the importance of art, music, film, and literature in boosting Nigeria's global presence.
He stated the government aims to make Nigeria a hub for businesses serving Africa and the broader global market.
Renewed Hope Agenda
Mr Tinubu said the Renewed Hope Agenda aims to create an economy where Nigeria’s talent and culture lead to better opportunities and improved lives for Nigerians.
This meeting is part of the President's activities in France during his working vacation.
