President Bola Tinubu has promised Nigerians that his government will work hard to tackle the rising insecurity and ensure the release of all those held captive across the country.

Data gathered by PREMIUM TIMES since President Tinubu took office shows that over 12,000 people have been kidnapped and 7,000 others killed by terror groups and criminal gangs in Nigeria.

Also, more than 600 students and teachers have been taken since Mr Tinubu became president. The abduction of over 80 students from schools in Borno and Oyo states in May raised serious concerns about the safety of Nigerians and schoolchildren. This led the government to order the recruitment of local security guards.

Mr Tinubu’s message was delivered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service in Abuja on Sunday. This service was part of the events for the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, according to a statement from his spokesperson, Yomi Odunuga.

The service, themed ‘God of hope, actualise our dreams,’ had top government officials and dignitaries in attendance. These included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack.

While delivering the president’s message, Mr Akume congratulated Nigerians on 27 years of continuous democratic rule since 1999. He described this achievement as a sign of the resilience, commitment, and sacrifices of citizens who fought for democracy's return.

He also honored pro-democracy activists and June 12 heroes, pointing out that many faced persecution, injuries, and even death for democratic governance.

The SGF said President Tinubu is determined to fulfill his duties and will “double his efforts” to ease the socio-economic struggles facing Nigerians by providing sustainable democratic benefits.

Recognizing the economic hardship, insecurity, kidnappings, and displacements affecting communities, Mr Akume said the government understands the worries of citizens.

“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” he stated. He added that Mr Tinubu is leading efforts to tackle these issues with empathy and responsibility.

Regarding security, Mr Akume emphasized that the safety of Nigerians is a priority for the Federal Government. He called recent attacks and abductions reminders that more work is needed.

He assured citizens that the safe return of all captives is a national priority and that security agencies are getting the support they need to protect lives, secure communities, and maintain Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” he stated.

As political activities for the 2027 general elections increase, the SGF urged Nigerians to reject violence, hate campaigns, and divisive language. He warned that democracy should not be turned into a battlefield.

He especially advised young people not to allow themselves to be used for thuggery, political violence, misinformation, ethnic abuse, or religious intolerance.

“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” he advised.

Mr Akume also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, the media, and families to promote peace, tolerance, and responsible behavior as the nation approaches another election cycle.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to democratic governance, interfaith harmony, and peaceful relations with the international community. He insisted that despite the challenges, the country’s democratic institutions remain strong and resilient.

The SGF praised the armed forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in protecting the country and upholding democratic rule. He urged Nigerians to honor the sacrifices of the June 12 heroes by working towards a nation where elections are peaceful, leaders are accountable, communities are safe, and every citizen can live with dignity.
