Super Falcons midfielder Toni Payne is happy after scoring her first goal since returning to the national team. This happened during Nigeria's impressive 2-1 win over Senegal's Teranga Lionesses in an international friendly. She called the moment special ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Payne helped the ten-time African champions secure a great win in one of their important prep matches for the tournament. Her goal not only sealed the victory but also marked the end of a long wait, as it was her first international goal in almost five years.

Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES in Ikenne, Payne said she was excited to be back with the squad and proud of how the team played overall.

The versatile midfielder has become key for the Super Falcons, thanks to her ability to play in different positions. She noted that being back with her teammates and working with the current coaching staff made the experience even better.

“I’m just happy to be back with the team, with my teammates and under the coach,” Payne said.

“I’m really satisfied with our performance.”

The goal came from great teamwork. Payne quickly gave credit to her teammate Shukurat Oladipo for the smart pass that set up the chance.

“It was a beautiful ball from Shukurat,” Payne added.

“She’s an amazing player and reads the game really well. For her to spot my run was fantastic.”

Payne’s goal made the home crowd cheer loudly, and she revealed it meant even more since it had been so long since she last scored for Nigeria.

“I’m happy to score the goal. It’s my first in almost five years, so it feels really good to do it here at home in Nigeria.”

Before switching to Nigeria, Payne played for the USA at youth level. She has now made 46 appearances for Nigeria.

With WAFCON coming up, Payne’s return to form is a big plus for coach Justine Madugu and the Super Falcons as they aim to defend their title.

Her experience, skill, and influence in the squad could be very important as Nigeria looks for more success in Africa.
