Uwem Ite, who leads Community and Government Relations at Oriental Energy Resources Limited, has been chosen as the chairman of the Governing Council of the Institute for Greening Education in Nigeria (IGEN).

Mr Ite shared the news of his election in a Facebook post. He mentioned that the institute held its first governing council meeting on 6 October 2026, after the federal government officially registered and recognized it.

This appointment means Mr Ite will guide the council as it works to promote environmental education and green skills development in Nigeria.

During the inaugural meeting, the council appointed Unyime Robinson as the executive secretary of the institute for an initial four-year term.

They also approved the IGEN Strategic Plan for 2026-2030 and the first-year operational work plan for 2026/2027, according to Mr Ite.

Mr Ite called this development a significant step for the institute, which he believes is now set to become Nigeria’s leading institution for promoting greening education and green skills.

Greening education means adding environmental sustainability, climate awareness, and responsible resource management into teaching and skill development. Green skills give people the knowledge and abilities needed to support eco-friendly economic activities.

By adopting a five-year strategic plan and an initial operational work plan, the institute has a roadmap for turning its goals into real programs and activities.

Mr Ite continues to work as the head of Community and Government Relations at Oriental Energy Resources Limited, an oil and gas company in Akwa Ibom State.

His election comes at a time when there is increasing focus on environmental sustainability, climate change, and the need to help young people gain skills for a more sustainable economy.

The success of the institute will rely on how well it puts its strategic plans into action through education programs, partnerships, and measurable results.
