Wayne Rooney has cleared the air about claims that he used weight-loss injections to get his slimmer look. He shared that his wife, Coleen, encouraged him to get surgery on his nose.
The former England captain, who is now 40 years old, said he has been working hard to lose weight through exercise. This came after rumors circulated that he was using weight-loss medication.
In an interview with the Daily Mail on Wednesday, ahead of the couple’s new Disney+ series, The Real Rooneys, Rooney laughed off the claims.
“It’s a shame, because I’m working really hard to lose weight,” he said.
Rooney also talked about his recent nose surgery, saying it was not just for cosmetic reasons. He explained that he broke his nose twice during his football career and had surgery after having trouble breathing through one side.
“I couldn’t blow one side out of my nose and so I had it fixed,” he said.
Coleen added that she encouraged her husband to get the surgery, partly because of his snoring.
“I tried to get him to do it because of his snoring,” she said.
Rooney first broke his nose while playing for Manchester United against Preston North End in an FA Cup match in 2015. He broke it again while playing for DC United against Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer.
The former footballer admitted he put off surgery for years. He made the decision to go through with it after the 2026 World Cup.
Rooney later shared on his Stick to United podcast that he was healing from the operation and had plastic tubes in his nose to help with the recovery.
His comments come as he and Coleen launch The Real Rooneys, a 10-part Disney+ documentary series that gives viewers a closer look at their family life and careers.
The series follows Rooney, Coleen, and their four sons, Kai, 16, Klay, 13, Kit, 10, and Cass, eight. It covers a time when Rooney moved away from football management and focused more on his media work.
The documentary premiered on Disney+ on Thursday.
