The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, believes his administration’s work on roads and community projects will boost support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
This was shared in a statement by Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, on X on Tuesday.
Wike spoke during a media chat in Abuja. He said his government has brought governance closer to people through infrastructure and by working with traditional leaders and other stakeholders in the FCT.
“The minister mentioned that former senators, past members of the National Assembly, and former area council chairmen have united to support the administration, regardless of their political parties,” the statement said.
Wike said this support shows the effect of his government’s way of running things in the territory. “It’s not about the candidates; it’s about the style of governance and administration as it regards the FCT,” he noted.
The minister emphasized the importance of meeting regularly with traditional rulers and local leaders. He said this is a key part of good governance.
He also mentioned that his administration has addressed security concerns by building at least two police stations in each of the six area councils of the FCT.
Wike stated that the government’s plans for development go beyond the city center to include areas on the outskirts of Abuja. He announced that at least ten projects would be launched before December ends, including roads connecting Karshi, Kubwa, and other neighborhoods.
He said these projects show his administration's commitment to building infrastructure outside the main city.
Wike laughed off the claim that his political efforts in the FCT were only about reaching a minimum electoral support for Tinubu. “How do you look at me? Coordinator of FCT, and I am looking for 25 percent? That must be a joke,” he remarked.
The minister also defended his government’s approach to issues affecting local communities, including traditional institutions and appointments. He urged critics to find another civilian government that has done more to support local interests through appointments and other actions.
Wike talked about the promotion of traditional leaders and the presentation of staff of office. He said plans are in place to give certificates to those who deserve them.
He addressed worries about water supply in Karu. A journalist pointed out that residents still lacked water even after a water project was launched. Wike explained that the government had set up the main infrastructure and access points. However, residents must arrange to connect their homes.
He rejected the idea that the government should connect every household directly to water. He said the infrastructure is meant to give residents a way to access water supply.
The minister is confident that his work on infrastructure, security, and community engagement will rally support for Tinubu in 2027.
