A man known as Success has reportedly died from injuries he got after being tortured by officers of So-Safe Corps in Ogun State. This incident happened on Coca-Cola Road, in the Oju-Ore area of the state.
PUNCH Metro learned on Monday from a Facebook post by Ota Gossip that the trouble started after an argument between Success and his mother on Saturday.
The post said Success’s mother called the So-Safe officials, who took him into custody. Instead of handing him over to the police, they allegedly took him to an unfinished building and tortured him.
The post stated, “According to reports going around the community, this issue started after a misunderstanding between Success, his mother, and his younger brother at home. During the fight, Success got a head injury and was bleeding.
“After the mother called, the So-Safe operatives came to help. According to people who saw what happened and videos online, the young man was eventually taken away from the area.
“However, people in the community say that instead of taking him to the police, he was allegedly taken to an abandoned building in Oju Ore, where he was beaten badly.”
Another Facebook user, Temitope Adeniyi, said the security officers allegedly beat Success to death. “He fought with his mother, so she reported him to So-Safe. The next thing, they carried him to an unfinished building and beat him to death,” Adeniyi wrote.
On Monday, the spokesperson for the So-Safe Corps, Adegunwa Adegbuyi, confirmed the incident during a phone call. He said the officers involved have been handed over to the police.
Adegbuyi condemned the officers’ actions. He said they acted outside the rules of the outfit. “The mother called us to help, and some of our ad-hoc staff went. They were supposed to follow the rules, but unfortunately, they took the law into their own hands.
“As soon as we heard about the case, we handed them over to the Nigerian Police Force because the Commandant does not accept any form of human rights abuse.
“We gave the first officer to the police, and after some hours, we handed over the second officer for necessary action. We are working with the police to ensure justice is served,” Adegbuyi said.
He added that the So-Safe Commander, Soji Ganzalo, had often warned officers against human rights abuses and getting involved in civil matters.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Babaseyi Oluseyi, has not yet replied to a request for comment on the issue as of the time of this report.
