The brutal murder of a farmer in Ala community, located in Akure North Local Government Area, Ondo State, has led to a violent clash between local youth and police officers. The police tried to stop the youth from taking the law into their own hands after the murder.

Reports say that the youth wanted to lynch the suspected killers, but police intervened. This sparked a violent reaction from the youth.

The farmer, Rasheed Hassan, was killed on his farm last week. The suspects also stole his belongings during the attack.

Things escalated when some youth leaders captured the suspected killers and handed them over to the police. The angry youth then attacked the police station where the suspects were held, trying to take justice into their own hands. This led to a clash with police officers who were trying to protect the suspects.

Residents reported that tension has been high in the community since Monday. Police reinforcements have arrived in the area and made several arrests.

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the situation and condemned the mob attack. Police spokesperson, Jimoh Abayomi, explained that the chaos started after the murder of Rasheed Hassan. His death was reported to the police on October 24, 2026. The police visited the scene and found his body.

“Preliminary observations revealed deep cuts to the victim’s head and other parts of his body, while his belongings were reportedly missing. Investigations immediately commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing,” Abayomi said in a statement on Wednesday.

The police spokesperson said the chaos occurred when the Ala Youth President, known as Olori Odo, arrested two suspects on October 26. While taking the suspects to the police station, he was confronted by an angry mob demanding that the suspects be handed over for extrajudicial killing.

“He subsequently sought refuge at the Ala Divisional Police Headquarters with the suspects. However, the mob pursued them and launched an attack on the police facility,” Abayomi added.

The mob became more violent, throwing stones and other dangerous objects at the police station. They resisted efforts by police rescue teams to enter the area. To control the situation, tactical teams were deployed to restore order and protect lives.

At about 1:45 AM on October 27, 2026, police operatives successfully rescued the two suspects from the mob. However, during the return trip to Akure, the patrol team came under attack. Two police officers were injured by pellets allegedly fired from a youth's pump-action firearm. The injured officers were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

After the attack, police arrested fourteen suspects linked to the assault on the officers and the police facility. Investigations are ongoing to find out the roles of those arrested and ensure that anyone guilty faces punishment.

The police have kept a strong presence in the area to prevent more violence. Normalcy has returned to the community, but security monitoring continues.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, condemned the attack on the police officers and the facility. He described mob action and attempts to disrupt police work as unacceptable.

He stressed that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands, no matter how serious the crime. He warned that the police will not accept attacks on officers or police facilities.

The Commissioner assured residents that they are thoroughly investigating the farmer’s murder and the violence that followed. He emphasized that those found guilty will face the law.

He urged the public to stay calm, work with security agencies, and provide useful information for the ongoing investigations. He also called on community leaders and youth groups to discourage mob action and let the justice system handle the situation.
