87-Year-Old Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Judge in Adamawa

The Adamawa State Police have charged an 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba, for trying to kill an Area Court judge in Fufore Local Government Area.

A statement from the police spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, says the suspect allegedly cut the hand of the judge, Hon. Dauda Hamman, with a cutlass.

"On 31st August, 2026, there was mild drama at Mayo-Ine Area Court, Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State, after Dahiru Garba, 87, from Korawa village, reportedly cut off the hand of the Presiding Judge, Hon. Dauda Hamman, with a cutlass."

The statement explains that the attack happened while the judge was handling a case between Dahiru Garba and another man, Ismail Yusuf.

"The suspect attacked the presiding judge with a cutlass and cut his hand multiple times, causing him serious injuries."

After the incident, Dahiru Garba was quickly arrested by police officers. The case was moved from the Divisional Police Headquarters in Fufore to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yola on 4th September, 2026, for further investigation.

Once the investigation was done, Dahiru Garba was taken to court on Monday, 8th September, 2026. He appeared before Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola, with Chief Magistrate Ismail Bello Shelleng presiding over the case. He faced one charge of causing grievous hurt, which goes against Section 219 of the Adamawa State Penal Code Law of 2018.

When the charge was read to him, the old man pleaded guilty. He blamed the devil for his actions and expressed deep regret for what he did.

The court ordered that he be held at the Yola Correctional Facility until the next hearing.

The Commissioner of Police, Kabir Hassan, assured everyone that the case would be thoroughly prosecuted to ensure justice is served.
