The African Action Congress senatorial candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Chioma Ifemeludike, has pulled out of the 2027 race. She said personal beliefs and recent events in the country influenced her decision.
Ifemeludike, who is also the AAC Deputy National Chairperson for the South-East, got the party’s senatorial ticket through a consensus during the primary election in May.
She made her withdrawal known in a letter to the party’s Acting National Chairperson. The letter was shared with journalists on Friday.
In the letter, she asked for her name to be removed from all records and processes concerning the Anambra Central Senatorial District senatorial candidacy.
She wrote, "I hereby formally notify the National Working Committee and the leadership of the African Action Congress of my decision to withdraw my interest and aspiration to contest for the office of Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District under the platform of our great party in the 2027 General Elections.
"This decision has been taken after careful reflection and in accordance with my personal convictions, principles, and commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of vulnerable members of society.
"Furthermore, recent events have reinforced my decision. In my view, the role played by Doris Ogala Umezurike in matters relating to the case of Baby Testimony and his physically challenged mother has been deeply concerning.
"I believe that the circumstances surrounding the matter contributed to prolonged distress, public embarrassment, and continued suffering for the child’s mother, while raising serious questions about the pursuit of justice for the child.
"These concerns have significantly influenced my decision to step away from my senatorial aspiration and focus on advocating for accountability, justice, and the protection of vulnerable members of society."
She again requested that her name be withdrawn from all records, processes, and considerations related to the Anambra Central Senatorial District senatorial candidature.
"I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the leadership and members of the party for the opportunity and support extended to me throughout this process.
"I remain a loyal member of the African Action Congress and will continue to work tirelessly for the success of the party and the advancement of its ideals.
"Please accept my assurances of continued commitment to the vision, principles, and objectives of our great party," Ifemeludike said.
