Adamawa Governor Declares Monday as Work-Free Day

After the death of Bamanga Tukur, a former national chairman of the People Democratic Party (PDP) and a presidential candidate in the Third Republic, the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, has announced that Monday, 14 September, will be a work-free day in the state.

The governor's spokesperson, Humwashi Wonosikou, shared this news in a statement on Sunday.

The work-free day is meant for citizens in the state to pay their last respects, take part in mourning activities, and think about the life and lasting contributions of the late politician.

This declaration is part of a three-day mourning period set by the Adamawa State Government to honor the deceased.

The statement also instructed all national and state flags at public institutions and government buildings in Adamawa to be flown at half-mast during the mourning period.

Governor Fintiri pointed out that the state government's tribute acknowledges the elder statesman’s significant service, highlighting his important role in the development of both Adamawa State and Nigeria.

While regular activities will stop for the day, the governor mentioned that essential services must continue to operate to ensure public welfare.

Mr Fintiri called on residents, religious groups, and community leaders to use the work-free day for solemn prayers for the late leader’s soul. He asked God to give strength to his family, friends, and the people of the state in this time of loss.

This state tribute comes after Tukur passed away on Saturday in Abuja at the age of 90, just three days before his 91st birthday.

He was buried on Sunday, September 13, in Yola, following traditional Islamic burial rites (Janazah) held at the Lamido’s Palace.
