Team Nigeria boxer David Akintola is set to travel to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. His main goal is to win a gold medal for Nigeria.
Akintola will compete in the men’s 80kg middleweight category. He said months of hard training have prepared him to face some of the top boxers in the Commonwealth.
“My target is to win the gold medal. I believe in my ability, and I have worked hard to prepare for this competition,” he stated.
He feels confident about his physical state and technical skills. Akintola said his confidence grew thanks to the quality of training he received before the Games. He called it a privilege to represent Nigeria on such a big international stage, saying it comes with great responsibility.
“I am optimistic about my chances because I know the work I have put in. I believe in my strength, and I believe I can make Nigeria proud,” he added.
Boxing has been one of Nigeria’s best sports for winning medals at the Commonwealth Games. Akintola is determined to keep that tradition alive and add his name to Nigeria’s list of champions in boxing.
The boxing team is heading into the Games feeling hopeful. They have gone through an extended training program to prepare athletes for the high level of international competition. The National Sports Commission is counting on these fighters to continue Nigeria’s legacy in Glasgow.
Since Nigeria joined the Commonwealth Games in 1950, Nigerian boxers have won over 30 medals. Boxers from Nigeria have often been a key part of the country’s medal hopes. At the Birmingham 2022 Games, they won four medals, with standout Elizabeth Oshoba taking home a silver medal.
