Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said that Nigeria’s banking sector is now stronger and more resilient. He also assured Nigerians that the insecurity facing the country will soon be tackled.
Akpabio made these statements while encouraging citizens to support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope reforms. He stressed that reforms in the financial sector, security efforts, and cooperation from citizens are key to Nigeria's economic recovery and growth.
He noted that the time when banks could suddenly fail and depositors would lose their money is over. He credited this change to reforms made under Tinubu’s government.
“Today, thanks to the bold vision and strategic foresights of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, our banking sector has transitioned from survival to absolute dominance,” Akpabio said.
He mentioned that the sector has become one of the safest and most technologically advanced banking systems in Africa. According to him, the ongoing consolidation and recapitalization of banks show that the government’s economic policies are working.
Akpabio said these reforms have helped restore investor confidence, protect depositors' funds, and set the economy up for long-term growth.
On Insecurity
When it comes to insecurity, the Senate President admitted that security challenges are still a big problem for Nigeria's development.
“Insecurity is a direct enemy of development,” he stated. “No foreign investor will build in an atmosphere of chaos, and no local business can thrive without safety.”
He explained that security agencies have moved from reacting to crime to being more proactive against criminals.
“The security forces are taking the fight directly to the enclaves of criminals, bandits, and insurgents,” he said. “The strategy has shifted from reaction to proactive confrontation, and I assure Nigerians that insecurity will be defeated.”
Akpabio also called for more cooperation between citizens and security forces. He said that having military equipment alone won't solve the problem of crime.
He urged Nigerians to give credible and timely information to security agencies. He described the citizens as a crucial source of intelligence.
“Security is a collective civic responsibility,” Akpabio said. “Our security personnel are working tirelessly on the frontlines, but they rely on actionable intelligence from the communities they protect.”
He urged people to stop being silent and to report any suspicious activities to the proper authorities.
“If you see something, say something to the proper authorities,” he said.
Akpabio also recognized the temporary economic struggles Nigerians are facing. He said the sacrifices people are making are part of efforts to fix long-term issues and build a stronger economy.
“We acknowledge the sacrifices of the Nigerian people,” he said. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his cabinet members are not resting on their oars.”
He stated that the administration is committed to policies aimed at creating a better future for Nigerians.
The Senate President urged Nigerians at home and abroad to support national development and work with government institutions.
“Let us stand united, support our security agencies, and work hand-in-hand with this administration to build the nation of our dreams,” he said.
Akpabio has previously stated that Nigeria will overcome its security issues. The National Assembly has also promised to continue supporting security and economic reforms under the Tinubu administration.
