The Anambra State Football Association will hold a special match on August 1. This match is to remember its former chairman, the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. It is part of events marking the second anniversary of his death.
Ralph George, the chairman of the ANSFA Media Committee, said the match will take place at the FC Ifeanyi Ubah Stadium on Ozubulu Road in Nnewi.
Ubah, who was also known as Ebubechukwu Uzo, was chairman of the Anambra State Football Association from 2016 to 2020. His time in office is seen as a key period for football in the state.
He started the One Family, One Footballer initiative during his tenure. This grassroots program began in Nigeria and Russia at the 2018 World Cup. FIFA President Gianni Infantino was present at the launch. The aim was to find and support young football talents in Anambra State.
In August 2016, Ubah also secured a significant deal between his club, FC Ifeanyi Ubah, and English Premier League team West Ham United. He called this agreement a major step forward for his club and for football in Nigeria and Africa.
While he led FC Ifeanyi Ubah, the club had one of its best times ever. They won the 2016 Federation Cup by beating Nasarawa United 5-4 on penalties at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos. This victory allowed the club to compete in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup, representing Nigeria on the continental stage.
Ubah, who was also a businessman and the founder of Capital Oil and Gas, passed away on July 27, 2024. To honor his memory, the Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi-led ANSFA board has made plans for the special match. This event will celebrate Ubah’s lasting impact on football development in Anambra State and Nigeria.
