Kylian Mbappe scored two goals as Real Madrid bounced back from their surprising loss to Real Betis. They beat city rivals Rayo Vallecano 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.
This win puts Madrid level on points with Barcelona at the top of La Liga. It also marks their fourth win in five league matches this season.
Mbappe started the scoring in the 14th minute from the penalty spot. Alvaro Carreras was fouled inside the box. The French star calmly sent Rayo goalkeeper Emil Audero the wrong way to give Madrid the lead.
Just three minutes later, Madrid made it 2-0. Mbappe turned provider this time. He passed to Carreras, who finished strongly to increase the lead.
Jude Bellingham added the third goal ten minutes before half-time. The England player finished a nice attacking move by side-footing Vinicius Jr’s cut-back into the net.
Mbappe nearly scored again before halftime. His powerful shot hit the woodwork during stoppage time.
Rayo Vallecano came back early in the second half. Sergio Camello scored, giving the visitors some hope for a comeback.
But Madrid kept control and sealed the win in stoppage time. Mbappe collected the ball and fired a low shot into the far corner, completing his brace.
This victory also continues Madrid’s strong home record against Rayo. They have now won 14 of their last 15 matches against Vallecano at home.
Barcelona can go three points clear again when they play Levante on Sunday.
For Madrid, this result is a strong answer to their defeat by Real Betis. It keeps them in the thick of the title race early in the season.
