Kylian Mbappe missed a late penalty as Troy Parrott scored his first goal for Real Betis. This gave Betis a 1-0 win over Real Madrid on Friday. The victory ended Jose Mourinho’s perfect start to the La Liga season.

Madrid had won their first three matches with Mourinho back as coach. But Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles denied Mbappe from the spot deep into stoppage time. This saved a memorable win for Betis at La Cartuja.

Vinicius Junior hit the post in the first half from Arda Guler’s pass across the goal. Mbappe was stopped twice by great blocks from Natan and Marc Bartra.

As Madrid struggled to break down Betis, the hosts took a surprise lead nine minutes before the end. Parrott scored from the rebound after Thibaut Courtois made a fine save from Nelson Deossa’s header.

Carlos Espi thought he had equalized with a superb acrobatic finish from a Vinicius cross. But the goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up.

Mbappe then hit the crossbar with a delicate shot. He was given a great chance to level the game from the penalty spot after Natan’s strong late challenge on Vinicius.

However, Valles saved Mbappe’s penalty. This victory lifted Betis to nine points from four matches, putting them level with Madrid ahead of their second Champions League campaign next week.
