APC names Sahabi Ya’u Kaura as winner of Zamfara North primary

The All Progressives Congress has named Senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura as the winner of its recent senatorial primary for Zamfara North. This is ahead of the 2027 general election.

Ya’u got 49,176 votes to beat Tijjani Kaura, who received 9,628 votes. Abdullahi Sani Shinkafi came in third with 6,206 votes.

Dr Auwal Aliyu, the Chairman of the APC Zamfara North Senatorial District Primary Election Committee, announced the results on Monday.

Aliyu said the election followed both the law and the party's rules. He stated, “Having satisfied the requirements of the law and the APC primary election guidelines, I, Dr Auwal Abdullahi, Chairman of the APC Zamfara North Senatorial District Primary Election Committee, hereby declare Sahabi Ya’u Kaura the winner of the primary election.”

Results Breakdown

The results showed that Ya’u won in all four local government areas in the senatorial district. He got 21,689 votes in Kaura Namoda, 19,017 in Zurmi, 3,815 in Shinkafi, and 4,655 in Birnin Magaji.

Tijjani Yahaya Kaura received 6,586 votes in Kaura Namoda, 280 in Zurmi, 2,087 in Shinkafi, and 675 in Birnin Magaji.

Shinkafi managed 150 votes in Kaura Namoda, 386 in Zurmi, 1,208 in Shinkafi, and 858 in Birnin Magaji.

This primary was held after Shinkafi raised a legal issue. He went to court, claiming there were problems with the previous senatorial primary.

The Court of Appeal in Sokoto agreed and ordered the APC to hold a new primary election. This led to the election held on Monday.

With this win, Ya’u has secured the APC ticket to run for the Zamfara North Senatorial seat in the 2027 general election.
