A former Liverpool coach, Arne Slot, has said an emotional goodbye to fans after leaving the club. He believes he is leaving Anfield with the team still “among Europe’s elite.”

The Dutch coach was sacked on Saturday after just one season. Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League, despite winning the title in his first season.

In a letter published in the Liverpool Echo, shared by PUNCH Online on Monday, Slot reflected on his time at the club. He thanked fans for their support throughout his stay.

“I leave with complete confidence in what lies ahead. The players who have given so much to this club, who have upheld its values and helped create so many unforgettable moments, have built foundations that will endure,” Slot wrote.

Slot, who is 47 years old, led Liverpool to their 20th league title in his first season. However, the club struggled in the following season with inconsistency and some heavy defeats in all competitions.

Despite the challenges, he pointed out that qualifying for the Champions League was a big plus. “Securing Champions League football was an important responsibility and one that ensures Liverpool can continue competing at the highest level next season and beyond,” he said.

The former Feyenoord boss also talked about the strong bond he built with fans at Anfield and in the city. “When I first stood beneath that sign in the Anfield tunnel, I knew what this club demanded. I leave knowing we never stopped striving for it,” he said.

He also mentioned that winning the Premier League title with fans present was one of the best moments of his career. “It was made even more meaningful because you got to enjoy it with us. Singing our songs, cheering the goals. And on the day we lifted the trophy, you were there,” he noted.

Slot paid tribute to the support Liverpool fans showed during tough times, like the passing of former player Diogo Jota. “The love, compassion and support shown by the Liverpool family was extraordinary,” he said. “The connection we share goes beyond football.”

He ended his message by expressing pride in the club’s achievements and hope for the future. “Liverpool’s 20th league title belongs to all of us and it will remain an important chapter in its history. Change is part of football, but I know that this club will continue to make its people proud,” he added.
