Crystal Palace forward Ismaïla Sarr needs time to handle his failed transfer to Liverpool, according to head coach Pierre Sage.

The Senegalese player was linked with a move to Anfield as the transfer window was closing. He had a great season, finishing as Palace’s top scorer.

But the transfer did not happen, leaving the 28-year-old at Selhurst Park.

Sage spoke to BBC Sport on Thursday. He said the situation could be tough for Sarr, especially since he had the chance to join one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

“He has to digest for sure because it’s a dream for a lot of players to play with this kind of club,” Sage said.

“He had a good opportunity but in the end it didn’t work. If he wants to continue, you have to have a good season with us as he did last year. We know he needs time.”

Sarr has not played for Palace this season due to a groin injury. He missed their losses against Everton and Manchester City. He will also sit out Saturday’s match against Fulham.

Sage believes that with time, Sarr will get over the disappointment and focus on his career at Palace.

“Like every bad situation, time does the job and we need time for that,” he added.

While Sarr's future is uncertain, Palace tried to boost their attack on transfer deadline day by looking at Belgian forward Malick Fofana.

The 21-year-old decided to leave Lyon for Sunderland in a deal worth £30m.

“We gave our best,” Sage said about the negotiations. “At the end of the day the player chose his criteria and I wish him and them the best because he’s a good guy and a good player.”

Next, Palace will focus on Fulham. Both teams are looking for their first points in the Premier League after losing their first two matches.
