Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer, who was part of the team that won the European Cup in 1982, has passed away at the age of 78.
Rimmer had a long and successful career that lasted over 20 years. He is one of the few players to have won the European Cup with two different English clubs.
A post on Sky Sports Premier League’s X account on Friday shared the news, stating, “Aston Villa have announced the passing of European Cup winner Jimmy Rimmer, who died at the age of 78.”
Rimmer started his professional career with Manchester United. He was part of the team that lifted the European Cup in 1968, even though he did not play in the final against Benfica.
After his time at Manchester United, he moved to Arsenal before joining Aston Villa. At Villa, he became the first-choice goalkeeper. Rimmer played a major role in Villa’s 1980, 81 First Division title win and their famous European Cup run the following season.
Aston Villa faced Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup final in Rotterdam. They won the match 1, 0, with Peter Withe scoring the only goal. Rimmer started the final but had to leave the game due to an injury after just nine minutes. Nigel Spink came in and delivered a standout performance.
Even though Rimmer departed early, he was still recognized as part of the European Cup-winning team and received his second winners’ medal.
During his time at Aston Villa, Rimmer made 229 league appearances. He also played for England, earning one senior cap.
