Stephen Estaquio scored late to give Canada a 1-0 win over South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 32 match at California stadium on Sunday. This victory sends Canada to the round of 16 for the first time in their World Cup history.
Estaquio finished from just outside the box, sealing a historic win for Canada. In their first competitive meeting, South Africa had more possession but Canada made better chances. South Africa's goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made five saves to keep his team in the game.
After South Africa threatened in the sixth minute, Canada took control. Cyle Larin and Jonathan David both had chances but were denied by Williams in the first half. Canada's pressure continued as Thapelo Maseko tested Maxime Crepeau early in the second half with a curling shot that was well saved.
Jacob Shaffelburg also had an effort that Williams tipped away. As the game went on, South Africa slowed down, looking for extra time. But Canada made their move in the second minute of added time. Estaquio found himself in the right spot at the center of the box to score from a deflected cross, hitting the bottom corner.
The goal sent Canada's bench onto the pitch, and fans celebrated wildly in the stands. With this win, Canada became the first CONCACAF team to win a knockout game in the World Cup since 2002. They will now face either Morocco or the Netherlands in the round of 16.
