Michael Carrick's time as Manchester United manager might be coming to an end after his team lost 2-0 to Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.
United had several chances to score at Stamford Bridge, but Morgan Rogers broke through their defense to score in the 50th minute.
Lisandro Martinez then made things worse for Carrick's side with two quick yellow cards. The second card led to a penalty, which Cole Palmer converted.
This defeat marks United's ninth game without a win. They are now only one point above the relegation zone and could end the weekend in the bottom three.
Many fans thought Carrick would be fired after the 3-0 loss to Bournemouth last weekend.
Instead, he was given another chance to improve the team's performance. Carrick will regret not taking his chances in the first half.
He brought back captain Bruno Fernandes after leaving him out last week for criticizing the manager's tactics during a 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League.
Fernandes had a chance to score when he shot over from Bryan Mbeumo’s cross.
Mbeumo then failed to connect with Fernandes’s cross at the back post. Amad Diallo was also denied twice by Chelsea's backup goalkeeper Mike Penders.
United thought they had equalized when Matheus Cunha scored from Harry Maguire’s corner, but he was just offside.
Carrick showed his frustration in a half-time interview. Things got worse for him at the start of the second half.
Rogers praised Carrick for helping his career at Middlesbrough, but he hurt his former boss with the opening goal.
Rogers picked up the ball in midfield and ran straight at the United goal, lifting the ball over Senne Lammens.
Martinez has also spoken out recently about United’s lack of spending to strengthen the squad for Carrick.
But based on this season's performance, Martinez is one of the players who needs replacing.
He struggled against Rogers and received a yellow card for pulling him down.
From the free kick, Martinez hit Wesley Fofana with a raised arm.
After a VAR check, referee Peter Banks awarded a penalty and gave Martinez a second yellow card.
Lammens got a touch on Palmer’s penalty but still let the ball roll into the corner of the net.
On a rare start under Chelsea's new coach Xabi Alonso, Estevao had a third goal disallowed for offside after scoring from Palmer’s pass.
Chelsea fans chanted “sacked in the morning” as their team dominated the final part of the match without scoring again.
Now, United's management faces another big decision ahead of a crucial Champions League match against Roma at home on Tuesday.
Having lost two out of three European games so far, United risks not only embarrassment but also financial loss if they lose again to the Italians at Old Trafford.
