Chelsea bounced back from being two goals down to beat Leeds 6-3 in a thrilling League Cup match on Wednesday. Cole Palmer and Danny Welbeck were key in rescuing the Blues.
Xabi Alonso's team risked elimination after Tarik Muharemovic scored in the first half. Brenden Aaronson added another goal right after the break at Stamford Bridge.
But Alonso made a smart move by bringing on Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto, and Reece James at half-time. This change helped Chelsea turn the game around.
Palmer scored twice to bring Chelsea level. Neto then put them ahead before Welbeck added the fourth goal. Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back for Leeds, but Barco and Welbeck scored again to secure a stylish win for Chelsea.
Chelsea's last match was a 2-1 loss to Premier League champions Arsenal on Sunday. That defeat ended Alonso's three-game winning start. But he got back to winning ways with this exciting victory, showing the kind of football that has marked his time as coach.
Chelsea has hit the net 16 times in Alonso's first five matches, showing off their attacking flair. But they have also given up 10 goals, which highlights the defensive problems that have followed them from last season.
Despite spending £349 million ($472 million) in the transfer window, Chelsea ended the Arsenal game with James and Malo Gusto, who usually play as right-backs, in central midfield roles.
Alonso also tried out a new midfield setup with teenage debutant Reggie Watson alongside young Argentine Barco. Watson, at just 16 years old, is now the fourth-youngest player in Chelsea's history. He is the son of Ben Watson, who scored Wigan's FA Cup final winner against Manchester City in 2013.
Alonso made nine changes to the lineup, which almost backfired when Leeds took the lead from a corner in the 23rd minute. Harry Wilson's delivery caught Chelsea napping, allowing Bosnia defender Muharemovic to score with a powerful header past Mike Penders.
Leeds didn’t seem shaken by Chelsea’s star players coming on at half-time. They struck again in the 48th minute when Ethan Ampadu's cross was flicked on by Lukas Nmecha. Aaronson finished the move brilliantly.
But Chelsea got a vital lifeline five minutes later when Daniel James's soft challenge on Pep Chavarria led to a penalty that Palmer converted. Just two minutes later, Palmer's shot found its way past Leeds' debutant goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, bringing Chelsea level.
Chelsea suddenly looked dangerous, and Neto curled their third goal in from 20 yards in the 60th minute. They scored a fourth goal within just 12 minutes as Welbeck turned and fired a strong shot past Zetterer, who struggled to save.
Calvert-Lewin pulled one back for Leeds in the 75th minute with a well-placed finish from Noah Okafor's pass. But Barco scored into an empty net after Zetterer mishandled Rogers's cross in the 80th minute.
Welbeck capped the scoring in stoppage time with a well-placed header from Barco's shot.
