British actor David Jonsson has been named the new Black Panther. This comes six years after Chadwick Boseman, who first took on the role, died.
The news was shared on Saturday during Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con Hall H panel in San Diego. They also confirmed that “Black Panther 3” will hit cinemas on December 15, 2028.
Jonsson, who is 32, will play Prince T’Challa II, known as Toussaint. He is the son of Boseman’s T’Challa and Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o.
The character was first seen as a child in the last scene of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” in 2022. The new movie will show him growing up.
Jonsson is gaining attention for his recent roles in “Alien: Romulus” and “The Long Walk.”
He is also recognized for the BBC and HBO series “Industry” and the film “Rye Lane.”
Boseman passed away in 2020 at the age of 43 after battling colon cancer. He kept his illness private, even while filming.
His death occurred as Marvel was working on a sequel to the first movie, which made $1.3 billion globally and was the first superhero film to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.
After Boseman died, Marvel decided not to recast T’Challa.
In “Wakanda Forever,” Letitia Wright’s Shuri took on the Black Panther role. This storyline earned Angela Bassett an Oscar nomination, the first for an actor in a Marvel film.
Wright will return as Shuri in “Black Panther 3,” along with Winston Duke as M’Baku.
Denzel Washington will also join the cast in a role that has not been revealed yet, marking his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Jonsson’s casting ends years of questions about how Marvel would continue the Black Panther story. They chose to keep the legacy within Boseman’s family instead of recasting his original role.
Ryan Coogler will return to direct, completing the trilogy he started in 2018.
