Afrobeats star David Adeleke, known as Davido, has expressed concern about the fading relationships among musicians in Nigeria. He said that while Afrobeats is making more money today, the unity that used to exist is gone.
Davido shared his thoughts during a recent episode of the Uncut Podcast. This episode started trending on X on Tuesday. He talked about how the Nigerian music scene has changed over the years.
He pointed out that between 2012 and 2013, the music industry was very united. Artistes often spent time together, collaborated, and supported each other.
"Financially, it is a great time doing Afrobeats, but the relationship amongst artists is a failure," Davido said.
"2012 to 2013, the industry was kind of together. Like, we all go out, we see ourselves, we all used to hang out," he added.
According to him, the rising success and wealth of Afrobeats artistes altered the relationships in the industry.
"Everybody just got too big," he said.
Davido also remembered the environment when he recorded his 2011 hit song, Dami Duro. He noted that many artistes were in the studio and interacted frequently.
"When I recorded 'Dami Duro', in the studio was Wande Coal, Shank, Bigiano. They were artists there. We was always in together," he said.
He observed that the friendly spirit of that time has mostly disappeared. Now, artistes tend to work more on their own.
"And then now everybody dey find their own," Davido said.
