Demehin says Ucheibe helped her join Benfica

Super Falcons defender Oluwatosin Demehin has said that fellow Nigerian player Christy Ucheibe helped her decide to join Benfica, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.

Demehin moved to Benfica from Turkey's Galatasaray on a three-year deal. She is the third Nigerian to join the club this summer, following strikers Janet Akekoromowei and Sebastian Flourish.

The 24-year-old centre-back revealed that she talked to Ucheibe before making her decision. The midfielder shared her positive experiences at Benfica with Demehin.

“Before coming here, I spoke with her during the national team training camp. She told me many nice things about the club,” Demehin said in an interview with BTV.

Ucheibe played for Benfica for four years before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2025. Demehin feels this move will help her grow while competing at the highest level.

“Benfica is the best club in Portugal and one of the best clubs in the world. Therefore, I know that being here, I can improve my performance,” she noted.

The defender mentioned that she brings hard work, discipline, and determination to the field. “I would describe myself as hardworking, disciplined and determined,” Demehin added.

She shared her excitement about joining Benfica on X, saying, “New beginnings. New challenge. Same ambition. Honoured to begin this new chapter with SL Benfica. Grateful for the journey so far and ready for everything ahead.

“Let’s get to work. Força Benfica.”

Demehin started her career with Sunshine Queens and later moved to Rivers Angels. Her good performances caught attention, leading to her move to Europe in 2022.

She spent two years with French club Stade de Reims before joining Galatasaray in 2024. Her transfer to Benfica is another step in her European journey, following Ucheibe's path at the club.
