The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, met on Monday with angry party members in Kano State. They held closed-door talks to find a way to settle internal issues.
Osa Director, the NDC's national spokesperson, shared this information in a statement on Tuesday. He said the meeting aimed to fix the problems linked to the primary elections that involved the Kwankwasiya Movement and other NDC members in the North-west.
The Kwankwasiya Movement is a group that supports the NDC. It was started by Rabiu Kwankwaso, the NDC vice-presidential candidate and former Governor of Kano State. Mr Director described the meeting as “productive” and said it lasted for several hours.
“Senator Dickson and the NDC leadership are mediating in the process to allow every member to take part,” Mr Director said. “The NDC leadership will not impose candidates in Kano State and across the nation because the party values internal democracy.”
Mr Director also made it clear that the NDC has not announced any official results for its 2027 primaries in any state. “So, the public and party members should ignore any such list going around,” he added.
PREMIUM TIMES learned that some NDC members in North-west Nigeria recently accused Mr Kwankwaso of trying to ensure that members of the Kwankwasiya Movement take over the party structure in the region. They claimed this would push out other important party leaders.
The Vice-Chairman of the NDC in the North-west, Mohammed Serina, and the Chairman of the party in Kano State, Hussaini Mariga, made these claims in a petition recently submitted to the party’s national leadership.
This newspaper found out that the petition came after results of the NDC primaries in the North-west circulated on Facebook, showing that most of the winners were linked to the Kwankwasiya Movement.
