The Edo State Government has allowed the reopening of three schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area. These schools were closed due to safety worries.

The government shut down the schools after the State Security Service warned of a plan to kidnap schoolchildren.

The schools affected are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.

The reopening approval was shared in a circular from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Enodolomwanyi Otamere. The circular was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria in Benin on Friday.

Mr. Otamere said the decision to reopen the schools followed a thorough review of the security situation by security agencies and other important people.

He mentioned that the government is confident that enough measures are in place to guarantee the safety of students, teachers, and school staff.

"After enhancing security measures and bringing in more safety actions in the affected communities and schools, the government is assured that the necessary arrangements have been made for the safety and wellbeing of learners, teachers, and other school staff.

"All public and private schools affected by the earlier closure are to start normal academic and administrative activities from Monday, 15 June 2026," he added.

The permanent secretary instructed school heads, owners, and education authorities to prepare for the safe return of students and staff.

He also urged them to work closely with security agencies, community leaders, and government officials to keep a safe learning environment.

He reassured parents and guardians that strong security measures are now in place at the affected schools.

"The government is fully committed to protecting lives and property and will keep watching the situation closely. We will take all necessary steps to keep the education sector safe," he stated.

Mr. Otamere encouraged parents and guardians to make sure their children return to school quickly to continue their studies.

Meanwhile, students taking the West African Senior School Certificate Examination in the affected schools have been doing their exams with special security arrangements.

With this new directive, normal academic activities are set to restart in the schools on Monday, as the government assures that the security situation is now under control.
