England defender Jarell Quansah has received a two-match ban from FIFA after his red card in the Three Lions' Round of 16 win over Mexico. This news was reported by Sky News on Thursday.
Quansah was sent off during England's exciting 3-2 victory at the Azteca Stadium. A VAR review decided that his tackle on Mexico defender Jesús Gallardo was serious enough for a red card.
FIFA's disciplinary committee has confirmed that Quansah will miss England's quarter-final match against Norway. He could also miss a possible semi-final if Thomas Tuchel's team moves ahead in the tournament.
Despite this, there were talks that the Football Association might appeal the ban. This comes after FIFA recently lifted the red-card punishment given to United States forward Folarin Balogun earlier in the competition.
According to FIFA's rules, players guilty of serious foul play automatically receive at least a two-match suspension. Quansah's ban adds to England's growing worries on the right side of their defense.
Before the tournament, England had already lost Tino Livramento to injury. Reece James was also ruled out after the competition started.
Quansah usually plays as a centre-back for Bayer Leverkusen. However, he was playing right-back when he got his red card against Mexico.
