Falconets Shine with 10-1 Win to Reach Round of 16

Nigeria’s Falconets achieved their biggest-ever win at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. They crushed debutants New Caledonia 10-1 on Sunday to move to the Round of 16.

The impressive victory at Stadion Miejski ŁKS in Łódź put Nigeria on four points and secured second place in Group F, right behind Spain.

After just one point from their first two matches, Moses Aduku’s team needed a win to keep their hopes alive. They responded with an offensive show, scoring nine goals before New Caledonia found the net late in the game.

Ramotalahi Kareem started the scoring from the penalty spot in the 17th minute. Rebecca Adegbemile quickly made it 2-0 just two minutes later.

Janet Seimeyeha Akekoromowei added a third goal in the 23rd minute. Kareem scored again four minutes later, pushing Nigeria’s lead to 4-0 before halftime.

The Falconets kept attacking after the break. Winner Onajite David made it 5-0 in the 60th minute. Kareem completed her hat-trick four minutes later.

Tosin Rafiu increased Nigeria’s lead in the 70th minute. Adegbemile scored her second goal in the 74th minute, and David added another just a minute later, bringing the score to 8-0.

New Caledonia got a consolation goal from Joceline Kourevi in the 89th minute. But David finished her hat-trick in stoppage time, sealing the historic win.

Kareem and David both ended with three goals, while Adegbemile netted two. This game was a big turnaround for the Falconets, who could not score in their first two group matches.

Nigeria started the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Spain. They then had a goalless draw against China PR.

The Falconets knew they had to win their last group game. Their chances of qualifying also depended on the result of the Spain-China match.

New Caledonia, in their first tournament, faced another tough loss, going down 5-0 to China and 11-0 to Spain in their opening games.

They finished the group stage with 26 goals conceded in three matches and only one goal scored.

For Nigeria, this 10-1 victory is the largest margin of victory in the history of the U-20 Women’s World Cup. It gives them a big boost as they head into the knockout stage.

The Falconets will now focus on the Round of 16. They aim to carry on the attacking spirit that finally brought them goals in this match.
